Alone we go fast. Together we go further!

This project stems from a common observation that the third cultural sector, both at french and european scale, is currently at a crossroad of various transitions : environmental, social, economic, democratic and digital. Across most of European countries, artists, creators and small cultural non-profit organisations are facing for years an increasing social and economic instability. The ongoing health crisis due to Covid-19, which makes the cultural sector step into hard times and deep changes, will further weaken their working and living conditions in the coming years. It is in this context that the project was created, to answer emerging needs and lack of guidance.

Inpact that stands for Innovative Partnership for Artistic and Cultural Transition , is carried out by seven countries, most of them part of the Roots&Routes network : Two from Spain : Valnalon  and Universitat Rovira I Virgili ; Centro Di Creazione e Cultura from Italy ; The Subjective Values Foundation from Hungary; SMOUTH from Greece; KITKC from Lithuania and from France, Les Têtes de l’Art which are the ones leading the project. It is part of the Erasmus + program and will last for two years, from October 2020 to November 2022.

The project specifically targets artists, managers from non lucrative organizations, people  with artistic skills without prior training in this sector. In other terms, those who face long-term social and economic difficulties, due to systemic barriers, opportunities and / or discrimination – women, migrants, the unemployed, people from less privileged backgrounds, disadvantaged neighborhoods or with a low level of academic training – and that are looking for new tools and resources to improve their situation.

So far, thanks to a first phase devoted to research, we realized that for almost every country, less than 1% of the overall budget is dedicated to culture in 2019. Furthermore, something we can highlight is the data we actually could not find : the average income of an artist. Indeed, globally this data is hard to find, and when we do find numbers, we can wonder how realistic they actually are.

One can find many surveys pointing out the dreadful situation artists are struggling with, from banned concerts to less opportunities and lack of income.Yet, few can find concrete solutions to these. Hence the importance of Inpact. We aim to undertake these struggles.

From the needs of our target group, we will conceive and disseminate innovative methods and tools, in order to train them to face the financial and social difficulties. Concretely, the idea is to help them gain skills, for a better access to employment and entrepreneurship, so that they become emancipated, and gain confidence in their personal capacities, in terms of innovation and change.

If you are interested in the artists employment topic here’s a link to an international project presentation “Routes to Employment. Arts and Culture as Enablers for Growth”  : it will enlarge your vision and give you insight into existing possibilities for artists.

Expected Results :

Two final results can be expected : A digital and freely downloadable Tool Kit and a short web series, both translated into english and five more languages. On top of that, we expect of course, to have a real impact directly or indirectly toward the participants and staff of partner organizations, personally and professionally at different levels.

To carry out this project, several activities designed with innovative methods and tools, and offered through co-creative and cross-sectoral approaches. For instance, we are soon to host a co-creation lab which is part of the first “Research”. It is a space that gathers artists and stakeholders for creating tools and methods designed in response to their needs.

If you want to know more about the project or the progress, we gladly invite you to follow the Routes & Roots webpage as well as Facebook, as we will be updating the development there.

Project background : The Office of Nothing-ism (a pun resulting from the French word “rien” = “nothing” as opposed to “tout” = “all” in “Office of Tou-rism”) is an initiative conceived within the framework of Mediactivism, a European project aimed at bringing together young people (including activists and journalists) around right to the city issues.

During the first stage of the project that took place in November 2019 to produce a reflection on these questions and imagine forms of media campaign, a group of young activists imagined this project of citizen counter-labelling. Conceived during a roundtable discussion around gentrification and the discourse on the city produced by institutions and the market, the idea is to deconstruct this territorial marketing approach and to give another vision, based on the representations and experiences of the inhabitants. This critical discourse focuses on 3 main themes: poor housing, air pollution and video surveillance.

Although the current context poses a considerable challenge for the urban activist fabric, the vibrant associative life of Marseille does not stop, and neither does the desire of young people to participate in it.

In a situation of second confinement, then curfew, the Office of Nothingism had to adapt the format of its activities, but it was able to introduce itself to the citizens of Marseille.

Its online inauguration was marked by the launch of a series of thematic talk shows that involved the participation of several experts and activists engaged in relevant issues related to the Right to the City in Marseille : “Safe City” projects and public space (1), health impacts of air pollution (2) and the proliferation of inadequate housing (3).

These online meetings gathered many specialists and members of collectives, giving the opportunity both to the speakers and to the young participants to share knowledge and establish a real dialogue on these questions.

On this occasion, the Office of Nothingism could make itself digitally known throughout the city and make a tangible connection with a community of committed citizens.

Beyond the local level, the team had also the chance to present the project across Europe. In the presence of the european partners of Mediactivism and young people, and in the company of Les Têtes de l’Art team, they facilitated the second of a series of online MIRO workshops on february 25th.

During this meeting, the international participants could discover how the project has been shaped in Marseille, receive interesting insights about Right to the City issues and especially share their thoughts and perceptions from their own contexts and personal experiences

In the meantime, the Office also asserts its presence in the internet community by disseminating different media creations on Right to the City issues.

Detalks, the European project that co-constructed a method for teaching foreign languages to migrants through the use of artistic tools and non-verbal language, is coming to an end.

We are pleased to inform you of the publication of a guide-book in English, available on the website of the European network Roots&Routes.

This manual contains all the experiences, good practices, textbooks and links to videos summarizing the work carried out in the 6 countries involved : Italy, France, Finland, Greece, Hungary and Germany.

The project

Detalks is a European project running simultaneously in France, Greece, Italy, Sweden, Hungary and Germany. Proposed by the international network Routes&roots, a network specialised in the creation of cultural and social projects, this project offers a framework in which to reflect on the use of non-verbal and creative techniques for teaching languages to migrant populations, mainly young people.

Main  objective

DeTalks aims to contribute to the social inclusion of young newcomers, refugees and asylum seekers in two ways: by developing an innovative methodology of language teaching through non-verbal communication and the use of creative tools, but also by including local young people or/and volunteers in the language learning in order to foster cultural exchange.

The project aims to develop pedagogical methods of non-verbal and creative communication by using the techniques and pedagogical tools ofthe performing arts.

To begin with, let’s remember what is the AJCM (Ateliers des jeunes Citoyens et Citoyennes de la Méditerranée). It is a programme aiming at organising simultaneous actions, debates and workshops between young Mediterranean people on issues related to the environment, gender equality and solidarity mobility. It started in 2015 from a growing need for engagement and dialogue between young Mediterranean people on the one hand, and between these young people and public decision-makers on the other hand.

One can see the AJCM as a network with the purpose to create a safe space for dialogue and action around the themes of ecology, civic engagement, eco-development and Mediterranean and European identity. Since 2019, the participants have broadened the themes addressed, with the incorporation of two new themes: gender equality and solidarity mobility.

To this end, workshops for co-creation and exchange of good practices are regularly organised by the various AJCM correspondents – from over 14 countries – involved in civic actions in a growing number of Mediterranean countries. Forums for exchange and dialogue have enabled joint decisions to be taken and actions to be prepared collectively around shared issues and values. In addition, they have offered the possibility of promoting local initiatives carried out in the correspondents’ territories.

 What are the Medtalks ?

As you might already have guessed by the name,  the medtalks are a series of talk shows. With the help of our correspondents and partners we will host the show from our studio, at Les têtes de l’art, each month with a different topic.

It is a Mediterranean media to make our voices heard, with the aim to highlight current issues on topics such as gender equality, climate change and solidarity mobility in the Mediterranean.

Broadcast live on several Mediterranean platforms, these shows will host activists, journalists and experts from different countries around the Mediterranean with the purpose of creating a dialogue and offering insights from local perspectives on shared experiences.

The first programme took place on Thursday, March 18th at 6pm French time and focused on the issue of empowerment and civic engagement of women in the Mediterranean.

We had the pleasure to count among us Paula Causi, Saoussen Jadi, Amal El Brini, and our co-organizers from the association ALDA (Association of Local Democracy Agencies) Morocco – ADL NORD MAROC – and Tunisia – Agence de la Démocratie Locale Tunisie – Chaimaa Seddad and Mouna Alouini and from the association Les Têtes de l’Art, Delphine Salvi.

Did you miss it ? don’t worry ! The show will be available for streaming on our website AJCM.org.

Don’t miss the second one though! The Medtalks will be back on thursday, April 8th at 6pm ( Paris time) and we will address the topic :  Artivism. A show co organised with Marine from the ACM Foundation and Narine from Youth Is Power NGO.

After 8 months of nomadism, we are back “home” at “Comptoir de la Victorine”. We know now that the space affected by the February 2018 fire cannot be rehabilitated for months, even years. So, end of September 2018, Marseille City Hall allowed us to reintegrate the space we had left in October 2016 for a roof renovation.
